Computer Vision Syndrome (Digital Eye Strain)
Hindi / common name: Digital Eye Strain (screen se aankhon mein thakan aur dard)
Computer vision syndrome, also called digital eye strain, is a group of eye and vision problems caused by long hours on computers, laptops, tablets and phones. It is now one of the most common eye complaints among students, office workers and gamers. It does not usually cause permanent damage, but it can make work and study uncomfortable. Most of it can be fixed with better habits and the right glasses.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain
- Tired, aching or heavy eyes
- Headaches, especially by evening
- Blurred vision or difficulty refocusing from screen to distance
- Dry, burning or watery eyes
- Neck, shoulder and back pain from poor posture
- Sensitivity to glare
Causes and risk factors
- Staring at screens for long periods with fewer blinks
- Uncorrected or outdated spectacle power, including small amounts of astigmatism
- Presbyopia after 40, making intermediate (screen) distance blurry
- Screens too close, too high, or with glare from windows and lights
- Poor lighting and posture
- Underlying dry eye or eye coordination problems
How it is diagnosed
An optometrist checks your distance, intermediate and near vision, measures any power you need, and tests how well your eyes focus and work together. It helps to tell the optometrist how far your screen is and how many hours you use it. Dry eye signs may also be checked.
Treatment options
- Correct any spectacle power, even small amounts
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Adjust the screen: about an arm's length away and slightly below eye level
- Reduce glare with proper lighting and matt screen settings
- Use lubricating drops for dryness if needed
- Office or progressive lenses for people over 40 who use computers a lot
Glasses and lens options
The most important things are the correct power and a good anti-glare coating, which cuts reflections from screens and lights. Blue-cut lenses filter part of the blue light; many people find them comfortable, but current evidence does not show that blue light from screens damages the eyes or that blue-cut lenses prevent eye strain on their own, so consider them a comfort choice. People over 40 often benefit most from office or progressive lenses designed for screen distance.
Prevention and everyday care
- Take a short break every 20 to 30 minutes and a longer one every hour or two
- Blink fully and often
- Keep text size comfortable rather than leaning in
- Use night mode in the evening if it feels more comfortable
- Get an eye test once a year if you use screens for many hours a day
When to see an eye specialist the same day
- Sudden blurred or double vision
- Eye pain that does not ease with rest
- Headaches with vomiting or neurological symptoms
- Flashes, floaters or loss of part of your vision

Do blue-cut glasses prevent eye strain?
They may feel more comfortable for some people, but research has not shown that blue-cut lenses alone prevent eye strain. Correct power, anti-glare coating, breaks and good screen setup matter most.
Can screens damage my eyes permanently?
There is no good evidence that normal screen use causes permanent eye damage. It causes strain and dryness, which improve with rest and good habits. In children, long near work is linked to myopia.
I have zero power. Do I need computer glasses?
Not necessarily. If you have strain, an eye test may find small power or focusing problems. Plain anti-glare lenses are optional if you simply prefer them.
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. It relaxes focusing and reminds you to blink.
Why do my eyes hurt more after 40 on the computer?
After 40, presbyopia reduces near and intermediate focusing. Office or progressive lenses designed for screen distance can make a big difference.
