Do cheap sunglasses harm your eyes? How to pick real UV protection in India

Cheap sunglasses can harm your eyes if they are dark but have no UV protection. The dark tint makes your pupils open wider, so more UV enters the eye. Look for lenses labelled UV400, which block light up to 400 nm, and do not judge by darkness or price. A good pair is one of the simplest ways to protect eyes in Lucknow's strong sun and dust.

Why UV matters

UV light from the sun can damage the front of the eye and the lens over years. Long exposure is linked to cataract, pterygium (a fleshy growth on the white of the eye), and photokeratitis, a painful sunburn of the cornea. Children's eyes let in more UV, so kids need protection too.

Dark does not mean safe

Tint and UV protection are different things. A lens can be very dark and still block no UV. Behind such a lens your pupils widen, and unfiltered UV gets in. That is why a poor sunglass can be worse than none.

How to choose good sunglasses

  1. Check for UV400 or "100% UV protection" on the label or tag
  2. Pick a frame that wraps or is big enough to cover the eye area, as UV also enters from the sides
  3. Choose polarised lenses if glare from roads or water bothers you; they reduce glare but are not what gives UV protection
  4. Choose a tint you can see through comfortably: grey keeps colours natural, brown adds contrast
  5. Check for distortion: look at a straight line through the lens and move it; the line should not bend or wave
  6. If you wear glasses, ask for a UV-protective or tinted version of your own power

Can you test UV protection at home

Not reliably. Home tricks with torches or banknote lights are not accurate. Ask the shop for the lens specification, and for important pairs, have it checked on a UV meter.

Sunglasses for kids

Buy kid-sized frames with UV400 and a soft, strong build. A hat with a brim adds extra protection during cricket and school games.

When and where to wear them

Frequently asked questions

Are all dark lenses UV protective?

No. Always look for UV400 or 100% UV protection.

Are polarised lenses the same as UV protection?

No. Polarisation cuts glare, while UV protection is a separate coating or material property.

Can I get sunglasses with my power?

Yes. Prescription sunglasses can be made in single-vision or progressive, with UV protection.

Do kids need sunglasses?

Yes, kid-friendly UV400 pairs are a good idea, especially for outdoor play.

How long do sunglasses last?

A good pair lasts years, but deep scratches and faded coatings reduce comfort and performance, so replace damaged lenses.

Related questions

Do I need sunglasses in Lucknow?

UV-protective sunglasses are a good idea in Lucknow, where summer sun is strong. They reduce glare and protect against UV rays, which over time contribute to cataract and pterygium. Choose sunglasses that block 100% UV; darkness alone does not mean UV protection.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist is a trained eye care professional who tests vision, prescribes spectacles and contact lenses, and screens for eye problems. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MBBS, MS/MD/DNB Ophthalmology) who diagnoses and treats eye diseases and performs surgery. At ORINvue, every eye test is done by our qualified optometrist, Khushboo Gangwar; if your eyes need medical treatment or surgery, she guides you to a trusted eye specialist.

Can I get my eyes tested if I have a red or painful eye?

It is better to see an eye doctor first. A red, painful or sticky eye may be an infection or inflammation that needs treatment, and power measured during an eye problem may not be accurate. Once your eye has healed, you can have a spectacle eye test. At ORINvue, our optometrist Khushboo Gangwar will guide you to a trusted eye specialist first, and test your eyes for glasses once they have healed.

How long do spectacle lenses last?

With good care, lenses can last a couple of years, but most people replace them when their power changes or coatings wear out. Children often need new lenses more often because their power changes. Yearly eye tests help decide when an update is needed.

Is the eye test at ORINvue free?

Yes. ORINvue includes a qualified optometrist eye test free with every spectacle package. ORINvue is opening in December 2026 in the Kalyanpur / Vikas Nagar area of Lucknow and will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
