How often should you get an eye test? A simple guide for adults and kids

Most adults with no eye problems should get an eye test every 1 to 2 years. Children and teenagers should be tested every year, and people over 40, diabetics, and anyone with a family history of glaucoma are best checked every 6 to 12 months. If your vision suddenly changes, do not wait for the date. Get checked the same day.
Adults aged 18 to 39
If you see clearly and have no symptoms, an eye test every 2 years is a sensible rhythm. Test yearly if you wear glasses or contact lenses, work long hours on screens, or notice headaches, squinting or tired eyes. Many people in their twenties are surprised to find a small power they did not know about.
Adults aged 40 to 64
Near vision starts to slip around 40 (presbyopia), so this is the decade when reading becomes harder. A yearly test is a good habit. It keeps your reading power right and also checks eye health, which matters because glaucoma and cataract are more common from this age and glaucoma is painless in the early stage.
Adults 65 and above
Yearly checks are best. Cataract, dry eye and macular degeneration become more common, and a small change in vision can affect safety while walking and driving.
Children and teenagers
Children's eyes change quickly, and many do not say they cannot see the board. Test a child at least once a year, and straight away if you notice squinting, sitting close to the TV, rubbing eyes, tilting the head or poor marks. Early testing matters for lazy eye (amblyopia), which is easiest to correct in young children. Kids with myopia need a check every 6 months because the power can rise fast.
Test sooner if you have
- Diabetes or high blood pressure: at least yearly, with a dilated retina check by an eye specialist
- A family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration
- A high power, or use of contact lenses
- Long daily screen time with headaches or dry eyes
- A past eye injury or surgery
Test the same day if
- Vision suddenly drops, doubles or gets a dark curtain
- You see new flashes of light or many new floaters
- There is pain with a red eye, or halos around lights
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an eye test if I can see well?
Yes. Some conditions, such as glaucoma, show no symptoms early, and mild power changes are easy to miss.
How long does an eye test take?
A complete vision and eye-health check at ORINvue takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Is a prescription from a year ago still valid?
Opticals usually prefer one issued in the last 6 to 12 months. If your vision feels different, test again sooner.
Can I just buy reading glasses without a test?
Readymade glasses may help a little, but they cannot match two eyes with different powers, and they skip the eye-health check.
How often should kids test?
Every year, and every 6 months if they have myopia that is increasing.

How often should I get my eyes tested?
Most adults should have an eye test once a year, or sooner if vision changes. Children are best checked every 6 to 12 months, especially with long study and screen hours. People with diabetes, glaucoma in the family, or anyone over 40 should follow their eye doctor's advice, which is usually a yearly check that includes eye pressure and retina examination.
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An optometrist is a trained eye care professional who tests vision, prescribes spectacles and contact lenses, and screens for eye problems. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MBBS, MS/MD/DNB Ophthalmology) who diagnoses and treats eye diseases and performs surgery. At ORINvue, every eye test is done by our qualified optometrist, Khushboo Gangwar; if your eyes need medical treatment or surgery, she guides you to a trusted eye specialist.
How long do spectacle lenses last?
With good care, lenses can last a couple of years, but most people replace them when their power changes or coatings wear out. Children often need new lenses more often because their power changes. Yearly eye tests help decide when an update is needed.
How long does a proper eye test take?
A complete spectacle eye test usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It includes a machine reading (auto-refraction), fine-tuning of your power with trial lenses by an optometrist, a near-vision check for people over 40, and a basic check of how your eyes work together. Medical eye examinations by an ophthalmologist with dilation take longer.
Can I get my eyes tested if I have a red or painful eye?
It is better to see an eye doctor first. A red, painful or sticky eye may be an infection or inflammation that needs treatment, and power measured during an eye problem may not be accurate. Once your eye has healed, you can have a spectacle eye test. At ORINvue, our optometrist Khushboo Gangwar will guide you to a trusted eye specialist first, and test your eyes for glasses once they have healed.
