Eye tests

How often should I get my eyes tested?

Most adults should have an eye test once a year, or sooner if vision changes. Children are best checked every 6 to 12 months, especially with long study and screen hours. People with diabetes, glaucoma in the family, or anyone over 40 should follow their eye doctor's advice, which is usually a yearly check that includes eye pressure and retina examination.

How long does a proper eye test take?

A complete spectacle eye test usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It includes a machine reading (auto-refraction), fine-tuning of your power with trial lenses by an optometrist, a near-vision check for people over 40, and a basic check of how your eyes work together. Medical eye examinations by an ophthalmologist with dilation take longer.

Is a computer eye test enough?

No. An auto-refractor only gives a starting estimate of your power. A qualified optometrist then confirms the final prescription with subjective refraction, asking you to compare lenses. Glasses made only from a machine reading can feel uncomfortable or cause headaches. At ORINvue, every eye test is done by our qualified optometrist, Khushboo Gangwar, not just a machine.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist is a trained eye care professional who tests vision, prescribes spectacles and contact lenses, and screens for eye problems. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MBBS, MS/MD/DNB Ophthalmology) who diagnoses and treats eye diseases and performs surgery. At ORINvue, every eye test is done by our qualified optometrist, Khushboo Gangwar; if your eyes need medical treatment or surgery, she guides you to a trusted eye specialist.

Is the eye test at ORINvue free?

Yes. ORINvue includes a qualified optometrist eye test free with every spectacle package. ORINvue is opening in December 2026 in the Kalyanpur / Vikas Nagar area of Lucknow and will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. You can register your interest through the Book Free Eye Test form on the website.

Will my eyes be dilated during a spectacle eye test?

Usually not. A routine spectacle eye test does not need dilating drops. Dilation is done by eye doctors to examine the retina in detail, or with special drops (cycloplegia) to measure a child's true power. If you need a dilated examination, for example for diabetes or sudden floaters, an ophthalmologist will do it.

At what age should a child have the first eye test?

A child's eyes should be checked in infancy if parents notice anything unusual, and every child should have a full eye check around age 3 to 5, before starting school. Early tests catch lazy eye, squint and high power while treatment works best. After that, a check every 6 to 12 months is sensible during school years.

Can I get my eyes tested if I have a red or painful eye?

It is better to see an eye doctor first. A red, painful or sticky eye may be an infection or inflammation that needs treatment, and power measured during an eye problem may not be accurate. Once your eye has healed, you can have a spectacle eye test. At ORINvue, our optometrist Khushboo Gangwar will guide you to a trusted eye specialist first, and test your eyes for glasses once they have healed.

Power & prescription

What do minus and plus power mean?

Minus (−) power corrects myopia (short-sightedness), where distant objects look blurred. Plus (+) power corrects hyperopia (long-sightedness) or is used for reading after 40. The number shows the strength in dioptres: −0.50 is mild and −6.00 is high. Your optometrist confirms the exact power during an eye test.

What are SPH, CYL, AXIS and ADD on a prescription?

SPH (sphere) is the main minus or plus power. CYL (cylinder) is the correction for astigmatism, and AXIS (0 to 180) is the direction of that correction. ADD is the extra near power for reading, used in bifocal and progressive lenses after 40. R or OD means right eye, L or OS means left eye.

Why does my power keep changing?

In children and teenagers, power often changes because the eye is still growing, especially with myopia. In adults, changes can come with age (presbyopia), diabetes and blood sugar swings, or cataract. Rapidly rising cylinder power can point to keratoconus. If your power changes often, have a full check with an eye doctor as well as an eye test.

Can glasses reduce or remove my power?

No. Glasses correct your vision while you wear them but do not change the eye's power. Not wearing glasses does not reduce power either; it just causes strain. In children, special myopia-control lenses and treatments advised by an eye doctor can slow how fast power increases.

Is −0.25 or −0.50 power worth wearing glasses for?

It depends on your needs. Very low power may not need glasses all the time, but some people notice clearer vision for driving, the classroom board or night-time with even a small correction. Small astigmatism can also cause strain on screens. Your optometrist will advise whether glasses will help you.

Can I use my old prescription to make new glasses?

If the prescription is recent, usually within a year, and your vision feels fine, it can be used. Older prescriptions may no longer match your eyes, especially for children, people over 40, and diabetics. Since the eye test is free with every spectacle package at ORINvue, a fresh test is an easy way to be sure.

What is PD (pupillary distance) and why does it matter?

PD is the distance between the centres of your pupils, measured in millimetres. It is used to place the optical centre of each lens exactly in front of your eyes. A wrong PD can cause strain, headaches or double vision, especially with higher powers and progressive lenses. Your optician measures PD when you order glasses.

Why do my new glasses feel strange?

New glasses, especially with a changed power, new cylinder, or a first pair of progressives, can feel odd for a few days: floors may look tilted or objects slightly bigger or smaller. This usually settles within one to two weeks. If headaches or blurring continue, have the prescription and fitting rechecked.

Lenses: blue-cut, anti-glare, photochromic, progressive, bifocal, high-index, polycarbonate

Do I really need blue-cut lenses?

Not necessarily. Blue-cut lenses filter part of the blue light from screens and some people find them more comfortable. However, research has not shown that screen blue light damages the eyes or that blue-cut lenses alone prevent eye strain. Correct power, a good anti-glare coating, screen breaks and blinking matter most. At ORINvue we explain the options honestly so you can choose.

What is an anti-glare (anti-reflection) coating?

Anti-glare, also called anti-reflection or HMC coating, reduces reflections on the lens surface. It makes lenses look clearer, reduces glare from headlights and screens, and lets more light reach your eyes. It is one of the most useful coatings for almost everyone, especially for night driving and computer use.

What are photochromic lenses?

Photochromic lenses are clear indoors and darken automatically in sunlight because of UV rays. They are convenient for people who move between indoors and outdoors and want UV protection without carrying sunglasses. They may not darken much inside a car because windscreens block most UV, and they take a short time to clear again indoors.

What are progressive lenses?

Progressive (varifocal) lenses give distance vision at the top, computer or intermediate vision in the middle, and reading vision at the bottom, with no visible line. They are popular for people over 40 who need both distance and reading power. They need accurate measurements and a few days to adapt.

Progressive or bifocal: which is better?

Progressive lenses give smooth vision at all distances and look like normal lenses, so most people prefer them. Bifocals have a visible line with only two zones, distance and near, and no clear middle zone for computers. Bifocals cost less and some people adapt to them faster. Your daily activities and budget decide the best choice.

What is high-index lens and do I need it?

High-index lenses, such as 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74, are made from denser material that bends light more, so they are thinner and lighter for the same power. They are most useful for higher powers, roughly above ±3.00 or with high cylinder, and for rimless or half-rim frames. For low powers, a standard 1.56 lens is usually fine.

What are polycarbonate lenses?

Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and far more impact-resistant than standard plastic, with built-in UV protection. They are the recommended choice for children, sports, safety glasses and rimless frames. They are slightly less optically crisp than some materials for very high powers, but for most users the difference is not noticeable.

Which lens is best for night driving?

A good anti-glare coating on lenses with your exact power is the best choice for night driving, as it reduces reflections and halos from headlights. Keep lenses clean and scratch-free. Yellow 'night driving' lenses reduce the total light reaching the eyes and are not recommended for driving at night.

Are glass lenses better than plastic lenses?

Glass lenses are scratch-resistant and optically clear, but they are heavy and can shatter, which is a safety risk. Modern plastic lenses with hard coatings are lighter, safer and can include anti-glare, blue-cut and photochromic features. For most people, especially children, plastic or polycarbonate lenses are the better choice.

What does UV protection in lenses do?

UV protection blocks ultraviolet rays that contribute to cataract, pterygium and other eye problems over time. Most modern plastic, polycarbonate and photochromic lenses block UV. For long periods outdoors, especially in strong summer sun in Lucknow, UV-protective sunglasses add comfort and glare reduction.

Frames & fitting

How do I choose the right frame size?

The frame should be about as wide as your face, with your eyes roughly centred in each lens. The bridge should sit comfortably on your nose without pinching or sliding, and the temples should rest over your ears without pressing. A good optician will check frame width, bridge fit and lens height, especially for high powers and progressives.

Which frame material is best: metal, TR90 or acetate?

Metal frames are slim and adjustable; titanium is light and corrosion-resistant. TR90 is a flexible, lightweight plastic that suits active people and kids. Acetate frames are sturdy, come in rich colours and suit bold styles. The best choice depends on comfort, skin sensitivity, lifestyle and the lens power you need.

Are rimless frames suitable for high power?

Rimless frames look light but show lens edges. With high power, edges can look thick, so high-index lenses are recommended. Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses are also preferred because the drill holes need strong materials. For very high powers, a full-rim frame of the right size often looks neater.

Why do my glasses keep slipping down my nose?

Slipping is usually caused by loose temples, a bridge that is too wide, worn nose pads or heavy lenses. A simple adjustment by an optician often fixes it in a few minutes. Lighter lenses, fresh nose pads and a better-fitting frame also help keep glasses in place through the day.

Can I put new lenses in my old frame?

Often yes, if the frame is in good condition, the right size for your face and compatible with the new lens type. Very old, brittle or bent frames may crack during fitting. Progressive lenses also need enough frame height. An optician can inspect your frame and tell you whether it is suitable.

What frame shape suits my face?

As a general guide, angular frames balance round faces, round or oval frames soften square faces, and most shapes suit oval faces. Rather than strict rules, try several styles and choose what feels comfortable and confident. Fit, comfort and lens performance matter more than any shape chart.

Contact lenses

Can anyone wear contact lenses?

Most people can, but not everyone. Severe dry eye, frequent eye infections, uncontrolled allergies or certain eyelid problems can make lenses unsuitable. A proper contact lens fitting checks your eye surface, lens fit and tear film, and you will be taught safe handling. Never buy contact lenses without a fitting.

Can I sleep with contact lenses?

Sleeping in contact lenses greatly increases the risk of serious corneal infections, unless lenses are specifically approved for overnight wear and your practitioner has advised it. Even then, risk is higher than daily wear. For most people, remove lenses before sleeping and follow the replacement schedule.

Daily, monthly or yearly lenses: which is better?

Daily disposable lenses are the most hygienic because you use a fresh pair each day with no cleaning. Monthly lenses need nightly cleaning and storage in fresh solution. Yearly lenses are less common now because deposits build up. Your eye care practitioner will advise based on your eyes and lifestyle.

Are coloured contact lenses safe?

Coloured lenses are safe only when properly fitted and bought from a legitimate source, with correct hygiene. Cheap cosmetic lenses without a fitting can cause scratches, infections and even vision loss. Never share coloured lenses with friends, and never wear them overnight or beyond their replacement date.

Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

Yes. Toric soft contact lenses correct regular astigmatism, and rigid gas-permeable lenses work well for higher or irregular astigmatism, such as in keratoconus. A careful fitting is needed so the lens stays in the right orientation, and a follow-up check confirms comfort and clear vision.

What should I do if my eye becomes red with contact lenses?

Remove the lenses straight away and do not put them back in. If redness, pain, light sensitivity or blurred vision continue, see an eye doctor the same day, because contact lens wearers are at risk of corneal infections that need urgent treatment. Bring your lenses and case with you.

Kids' eyes

How do I know if my child needs glasses?

Signs include sitting close to the TV, holding books very near, squinting, tilting the head, rubbing the eyes, headaches, avoiding reading or complaints about the classroom board. Some children show no signs, especially with lazy eye. A regular eye test is the only reliable way to know.

Why is myopia increasing in children?

Children today spend more time on near work like studying and screens, and less time outdoors in daylight. Both are linked to myopia. Genetics also matter: children of myopic parents are at higher risk. Encouraging around two hours of outdoor time a day and regular screen breaks can help.

What are myopia control lenses?

Myopia control spectacle lenses are specially designed lenses that give clear central vision while changing how light focuses on the outer retina, a signal thought to slow eye growth. They can slow myopia progression in many children. They work best as part of a plan with an eye doctor, alongside outdoor time and other options such as low-dose atropine.

Which lenses and frames are best for children?

Children should wear impact-resistant polycarbonate or Trivex lenses in flexible, lightweight frames that fit snugly, ideally with spring hinges or TR90 material. An anti-scratch coating helps, and a strap can keep glasses on during sports. At ORINvue, our optometrist can guide parents on safe lens and frame choices during the free eye test with every package.

Will my child's power go away if they wear glasses regularly?

Glasses correct vision but do not remove power. Some children with hyperopia see their power reduce naturally as they grow, but myopia usually increases during school years. Regular eye tests make sure the glasses stay correct, and an eye doctor can advise on myopia control if power is rising quickly.

How much screen time is safe for my child's eyes?

Health bodies generally advise very limited screen time for young children and balanced use for older children, with regular breaks. For eye health, follow the 20-20-20 rule, keep screens at a good distance, and make sure children spend time outdoors every day. Regular eye tests catch problems early.

Spectacles care

How should I clean my glasses?

Rinse your glasses under lukewarm water, apply a drop of mild dish soap or lens cleaner, gently rub with your fingertips, rinse and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid shirts, tissues and paper napkins, which can scratch lenses. Never use hot water or harsh chemicals that can damage coatings.

Why do my lenses get scratched so quickly?

Lenses get scratched when wiped dry, cleaned with clothing, placed lens-down on surfaces or carried without a case. Anti-scratch hard coatings help but do not make lenses scratch-proof. Always store glasses in a case and clean them with water and a microfibre cloth.

Can heat damage my glasses?

Yes. Leaving glasses on a car dashboard in Lucknow's summer heat, or exposing them to hot water or steam, can crack lens coatings and warp plastic frames. Keep glasses in a case and out of direct heat, and never leave them in a parked car on a sunny day.

How long do spectacle lenses last?

With good care, lenses can last a couple of years, but most people replace them when their power changes or coatings wear out. Children often need new lenses more often because their power changes. Yearly eye tests help decide when an update is needed.

My frame screw keeps getting loose. What should I do?

Loose screws are common, especially with daily wear. Do not over-tighten them yourself with the wrong tool, as this can strip the thread. Visit an optician for a quick tightening and adjustment; a small drop of thread-locking fluid applied by the optician can stop it loosening again.

Prices in Lucknow

How much do spectacles cost in Lucknow?

Prices in Lucknow vary widely depending on the frame, lens material, coatings and brand, and many shops charge extra for lens upgrades after quoting a frame price. At ORINvue, spectacles start from ₹999 all-inclusive with no hidden lens charges, and a qualified optometrist eye test is free with every package.

What does 'no hidden lens charges' mean at ORINvue?

It means the price you see for a spectacle package is the price you pay, with the lens included, rather than a low frame price followed by extra charges for the lenses. ORINvue's spectacles start from ₹999 all-inclusive, and the eye test by a qualified optometrist is free with every package.

How fast can I get my glasses at ORINvue?

Most single-vision glasses at ORINvue are ready in 24 hours. Progressive and special lenses usually take longer because they are custom-made. ORINvue opens in December 2026 in the Kalyanpur / Vikas Nagar area and is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Why are progressive lenses more expensive than single-vision lenses?

Progressive lenses have a complex, custom-designed surface that gives distance, intermediate and near vision in one lens without a line. They require precise measurements, specialised manufacturing and careful fitting, which makes them costlier than single-vision lenses. Higher-end designs offer wider clear zones and easier adaptation.

Are cheap online glasses a good idea?

Online glasses can be convenient, but without in-person measurements of PD, fitting height and frame adjustment, they may not sit or work correctly, especially for higher powers and progressives. Lens quality can also vary. A local optical store can measure, fit and adjust your glasses and recheck them if something feels wrong.

Where is ORINvue located in Lucknow?

ORINvue is a new optical store opening in December 2026 in the Kalyanpur / Vikas Nagar area of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The exact street address has not been announced yet; follow the website and the orinvue.lucknow Instagram page for updates. You can register for a free eye test on the website.

Eye health habits

What is the 20-20-20 rule?

Every 20 minutes of screen or near work, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. It relaxes the focusing muscles and reminds you to blink, reducing eye strain and dryness. It is simple advice that suits students, office workers and gamers alike.

Which foods are good for the eyes?

A balanced diet with green leafy vegetables such as spinach and methi, carrots, yellow and orange fruits, eggs, nuts and fish if you eat it provides vitamin A, lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fats that support eye health. Food cannot correct spectacle power, but good nutrition supports overall eye health and helps prevent vitamin A deficiency.

Can eye exercises remove my glasses?

No. Eye exercises cannot cure myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia, because these are caused by the shape of the eye or lens. Some specific exercises prescribed by an eye professional help certain focusing and coordination problems. Be wary of products or videos claiming to remove glasses naturally.

Is it safe to put rose water or home remedies in the eyes?

It is best not to put rose water, honey, ghee, onion juice or other home remedies in your eyes. They are not sterile and can cause infection or irritation. Use only eye drops recommended by a doctor or pharmacist, and see an eye doctor if your eyes are red or painful.

Do I need sunglasses in Lucknow?

UV-protective sunglasses are a good idea in Lucknow, where summer sun is strong. They reduce glare and protect against UV rays, which over time contribute to cataract and pterygium. Choose sunglasses that block 100% UV; darkness alone does not mean UV protection.

Does reading in dim light damage your eyes?

Reading in dim light can cause temporary eye strain and tiredness, but it does not permanently damage the eyes. Good lighting makes reading more comfortable, especially after 40. If you constantly struggle to read, have an eye test, as you may need reading glasses.

Is it okay to use eye drops from the chemist without a prescription?

Simple lubricating drops (artificial tears) are generally safe for dryness. Avoid using antibiotic or steroid eye drops without a doctor's prescription. Steroid drops in particular can raise eye pressure and cause glaucoma or cataract if used without supervision, and can worsen some infections.

When should I see an eye doctor immediately?

Go to an eye doctor or hospital the same day for sudden vision loss, sudden floaters or flashes, a curtain over vision, severe eye pain, a chemical splash, an eye injury, a red painful eye with light sensitivity, or sudden double vision. These can be signs of serious conditions where quick treatment protects sight.
